Should I expect to pay a deposit when I sign an agreement?

Deposit requirements vary from contractor to contractor. While 50% is normal for the industry, it is not considered unreasonable to pay a deposit to cover at least the cost of materials. With today's high prices many times the 50% won't cover the material costs. You should never pay for the total job up front. It is also not recommended that the total deposit and progress payments equal more than 75% of the total job price.
